Measurements at Dowkabottom Cave
Hidden away and mysterious, with beautiful reverb.
We had an extremely intense day recording measurements at Dowkerbottom Cave. We measured in total 7 source positions in the cave. It will be necessary to go back for another visit. What an adventure! Sincere thanks to caving expert Chris Jackson for providing access and insights about caving, the area, the types of rock, keeping us safe and operating the starter pistol.
Thanks to Keith Vickers (yellow) for providing and operating additional specialist microphones and accelerometers; Mariana Lopez (in red) for operating the Sound Devices; Richard Carter (purple) for aerial photography and additional photography; that's me Cobi (in black) and our caving guide Chris Jackson (turquoise). Thanks to TFTI for equipment support!
Chris Jackson shared a survey by the Craven Pothole Club (1953):
As well as another survey created by A. Latham and H. Crabtree :
We positioned the microphone marked with a red dot in the chamber past the Second Chamber. As you can see on the survey, the cave continues much deeper. After this ‘third’ chamber, the tunnel gets very narrow and tricky to move with equipment. In this schematic the microphone (M1) is indicated in red and source positions (S-2 - S7) indicated in green.
Here is the site from an aerial view (R. Carter) - the entire area is incredible.
